Our facility opened as Goodway Graphics in 1970 at the suggestion of the leader of America's largest defense contractor. For years, Washington, DC was the nucleus of this industry and much of its documentation was printed at our sister plant in Springfield, VA. But in the late 60s defense firms were migrating north and their buyers needed a regional printer who understood their needs. Throughout the 70s, firms such as General Dynamics, Raytheon, Electric Boat, General Electric, RCA and Honeywell were the foundation of our business.
In the 80's, the defense industry largely moved south and west - leaving Goodway to build upon its then second largest market sector - High Tech. Honeywell, Digital, Hewlett Packard, Prime and other major corporations relied on Goodway's cold webs and extensive in-house bindery capabilities to produce user manuals and other documentation. By the early 1990s, high tech required shorter runs and quicker turns - a demand Goodway met by becoming one of the region's early adopters of digital technology. Goodway developed and hosted one of the first web-based just-in-time documentation ordering systems for HP. This program utilized a proprietary system of inventory pick'n'pack and digital print-on-demand to guarantee daily deliveries of key product documentation to the back end of HP's production lines.
By the new millennium, virtually all hardware and software documentation had migrated to CDs or downloadable PDFs. But by then, Goodway's commitment to digital technology, combined with its burgeoning mailing and fulfillment capabilities had paved the way for new opportunities. Higher Education, Direct Marketing, product resellers, franchisers, etc. were all prime candidates for the power of digital printing and its offshoots - variable data printing (VDP) and web-based print-on-demand (POD). Goodway has programs with some of the area's biggest colleges and universities, marketing firms, and franchise operations.
In 2007, Goodway's parent company - The Goodway Group of Companies, headquartered in Jenkintown, PA called a summit meeting of its three divisions with the goal of getting the three disparate operations to work more collaboratively. Today work is routinely swapped between our Massachusetts plant and our sister plant in Virginia; and the agency division in Pennsylvania cross-sells our services to its global client base. To solidify this collaboration, in January 2008 Goodway Graphics of Massachusetts officially became the Goodway Group of Massachusetts.
