Our facility opened as Goodway Graphics in 1970 at the suggestion of America’s largest defense contractors. For years, Washington, DC was the nucleus of this industry and much of its documentation was printed at our sister plant in Springfield, VA. But in the late 60s defense firms were migrating north and their buyers needed a regional printer who understood their needs. Throughout the 70s, firms such as General Dynamics, Raytheon, Electric Boat, General Electric, RCA and Honeywell were the foundation of our business.

In the 80’s, the defense industry largely moved south and west – leaving Goodway to build upon its then second largest market sector, High Tech, for which Goodway’s cold webs and extensive in-house bindery capabilities produced user manuals and other documentation. By the early 1990s, high tech required shorter runs and quicker turns – a demand Goodway met by becoming one of the region’s early adopters of digital technology.

In 1988, in neighboring Woburn, DMI, Inc. opened its doors providing fast turnaround print on demand, kitting, and order fulfillment services for Massachusetts High Tech firms. With twenty four hour production operations and a focus on short run reprographic versus offset printing, DMI’s business model was an immediate success. In the early 90’s the Xerox DocuTech heralded the start of the digital printing age and DMI was the first printer in the region to utilize this revolutionary new printing technology. With the advent of the Internet, DMI again led the way by developing some of the first web based tools that allowed clients to electronically submit new orders, re-prints, and fulfillment orders. Orders could now be placed with a few clicks of a mouse instead of tedious and time consuming phone calls, faxes, and emails. By 2000 DMI had become the largest digital printing services provider in the Northeastern U.S., a position it held for the next decade. DMI’s continued forward-looking mindset, investments in new equipment and cutting edge technology, and a commitment to provide clients the highest levels of quality and speed on a 24/7 basis helped them and their clients achieve stellar growth.

By the new millennium, virtually all hardware and software documentation had migrated to CDs or downloadable PDFs. But by then, DMI & Goodway’s commitment to digital printing technology, expansion into a broader based client market combined with our burgeoning mailing and fulfillment capabilities had paved the way for new opportunities. Higher Education, Direct Marketing, product resellers, franchisers, etc. were all prime candidates for the power of digital printing and its offshoots – variable data printing (VDP) and web-based print-on-demand (POD).

The 2007 – 2010 recession was harsh on many industries – perhaps none more than the printing industry. As print volumes shrank in favor of digital dissemination, many of the area’s venerable firms succumbed to the weight of equipment debt and excess capacity. To strengthen both companies’ position in this challenging market, Goodway Group and DMI joined forces and on March 1, 2010 consolidated their operations into the Goodway facility in Burlington. This new venture combines the best elements of each firm. Our talented staff and enhanced capabilities prove that ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts’.
